Egg-laying hens, some of the most exploited animals on the planet, live under conditions that barely differ from torture. The majority of them are confined in cages so small they cannot even spread their wings, forced to spend their short lives in suffocatingly restricted environments. This grim reality, however, clashes with the growing demands of citizens for improved animal welfare.

The campaign "End the Cage Age," supported by the European Union, highlights the urgency of abolishing this practice. After gathering over 1.4 million signatures, the European Parliament acknowledged the need for change. This initiative aims to ban caged farming systems for all farm animals, including egg-laying hens, by 2027.

 

A Step Forward for Animal Rights and Public Health

The impact of this change is multifaceted. First, transitioning to cage-free farming systems significantly improves the quality of life for animals. Hens are able to move freely, scratch the ground, nest, and express natural behaviors that are restricted in cages. In this way, animal welfare becomes a core focus of food production.

Equally important are the implications for public health, including:

  • Reducing the risk of disease transmission: Farming animals in cages creates overcrowded and unhygienic conditions, fostering the development and spread of infectious diseases.
  • Improving food quality: Eggs and meat from animals living in more natural conditions are richer in nutrients and free from harmful residues of hormones or antibiotics often used in industrial farming.
  • Decreasing antibiotic use: In caged systems, animals are often given preventative antibiotics to avoid illness. Reducing the need for widespread antibiotic use protects public health from the threat of antimicrobial resistance.

The "End the Cage Age" initiative addresses not only animal rights but also the promotion of human health and a sustainable, responsible food system.

Consumers are empowered to make more conscious choices. The abolition of caged farming is expected to enhance trust in egg products, while businesses investing in more sustainable models may gain greater market acceptance.
